Tennessee Firefighter Stabbed at Fire Scene

A 55-year-old homeless man allegedly attacked a firefighter Friday with a hunting knife after authorities were alerted to a fire in the garage where the man had set up camp.

Napa State Hospital murder raises safety questions

NAPA, Calif. (KGO) — Workers at Napa State Hospital are devastated by the murder of a health care worker at their facility that is raising hard questions about safety at the prison hospital. Psychiatric technician Donna Gross was killed Saturday on the grounds of the forensics unit. Patient Jess Massey, who has a long rap sheet which includes attempted homicide, was arrested for the murder.

The “Difficult Patients Workshop” will address issues rarely brought to light in EMS programs. I took the E.S.C.A.P.E. class held at the Wisconsin EMS conference in Milwaukee. This class was excellent! It taught me many things that I can use in EMS, along with my regular job as being a nurse in the ER. Prior to this class I would have to say that I have been injured as an EMT and a nurse. Taking this class taught me skills that I can use to avoid being injured. I would recommend this class to anybody who is putting themselves in harms way because of the job that they have to do.

At my 4 foot 10 inch stature, it was very important to me to learn to defend myself while maintaining the safety of my crew and patients. I found the “ESCAPE” program to be more than I could have ever expected! The instructors were very patient with the students and extremely knowledgeable in the subject matter. The combination of classroom and hands-on training made this program invaluable to me.

Since completing the course I have, thankfully, not needed to employ any of the tactics. However, there have already been several instances where I have been able to reach back and draw on the information. Each time I have felt that I had an “out” and that alone lowered the stress level caused by the situation. I knew I was prepared. I review what I learned on a regular basis, for my professional safety as well as in my daily life. You have armed me with a non-lethal, yet effective, weapon for which I am eternally grateful. I would highly recommend everyone take this class and, given the opportunity, I would enroll again as a refresher. Thank you!

This class was absolutely phenomenal! It is something everyone should take & learn. Not only did we learn & practice moves to protect & defend ourselves, we also learned how to protect & help others from coworkers to patients. This is a great tool everyone should have, especially in the Fire & EMS field. I definitely would recommend this class to everyone & would take it again myself. A longer course would also be great! Thank you so much for your time while at the class, too. You spent time with each of us with the different moves & helped us out to make sure they were being done the correct way.
