“Defensive Tactics for Offensive Patients”

Assault related injuries to medical personnel have and will continue to escalate as society changes.  Although the function of the healthcare professional is to provide care to victims of illness and injury, surveys indicate that over 5% of all EMS calls involve a violent patient. This interactive presentation will take an in-depth and realistic look at “scene safety” and provide a few techniques to be used in the event of an unexpected attack.

“Tied down” or “Safely secured” – the myths and pitfalls of physical restraints

The restraint of combative patients has been a topic of discussion amongst EMS providers and medical directors for years.  Recently, many agencies have implemented procedures or protocols specific to this issue, however few have provided appropriate reinforcement training to successfully comply with these directives.  This presentation will outline the “best practices” for identifying patients that require restraint, legal aspects and patient rights, and procedures for applying physical restraint and devices.

“Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll”

For decades, mind-altering substances have been a huge part of music festivals and large gatherings throughout the world. Today with “date-rape” drugs on college campuses, Ecstasy at underground rave parties, and a strong Heroin comeback at rock concerts, EMS personnel are tasked with evaluating and treating a whole new category of patients. With the presenter’s real life experience and exposure to these chemicals, this presentation delivers the needed information to not only indentify and treat these patients, but also better understand the psychological mindset of those under the influence of such chemicals.
